Other factors, however, are easier to detect and can have noticeable effects on the outcome of the game. In American football, for instance, the crowd often makes as much noise as it can when the visiting team is about to run a play. That can make it very difficult for the visiting team's quarterback to call audible play changes, or for any player to hear the snap count. In contrast, the crowd is often quiet while the home team is on offense, and that enables the quarterback to use the hard count intended to draw the defense offsides as the defense can hear the hard count.
It thus would have been awfully nice for the Phillies if they had gotten home-field advantage, and the fact that they didn't get swept makes one begin to ponder what might have been... Sort of like the 2007 Red Sox, the 2009 Yankees really didn'tneed home-field advantage in the World Series. In addition to the best overall record in MLB, they also had the best home record. What we have here is more or less the opposite of the 2005 World Series.
Reminder: MLB All-Star Game does not determine World Series home-field advantage
In the Wild Card Game, the team with the best regular-season record wins the home field advantage. The Red Sox were a better team than the Rockies in the regular season in 2007, winning 96 games to Colorado's 90. The Red Sox also had a superior home record, winning more games at home than all but two other teams. In baseball, the home team – which bats in the bottom half of each inning – enjoys the advantage of being able to end the game immediately if it has the lead in the ninth inning or in extra innings.
The following week, the Vikings' Monday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears was moved to the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium. Rugby union's European Rugby Champions Cup also uses a seeding system to determine home advantage in the quarterfinals (though not in the semifinals, where the nominal "home" teams are determined by a blind draw). An extreme example of home advantage was the 2013 Nigeria Premier League; each of the 20 teams lost at most 3 of 19 home matches and won at most 3 of 19 away matches. Paul Doyle ascribed this to visiting teams' facing "violent crowds, questionable refereeing and [...] rriving just before kick-off after long road trips, often on hazardous surfaces". The data was published in the Journal of Sports Sciences and suggested that for every additional 10,000 people attending, home team advantage increased by 0.1 goals. Additionally, his study found that home teams are likely to be awarded more penalty kicks, and this is more likely with inexperienced referees.

As an example, in the 1982 NBA Finals, the Los Angeles Lakers played the Philadelphia 76ers, with the 76ers having earned home court advantage because of a better regular season record. Four games were scheduled to be played in Philadelphia, while three were scheduled in Los Angeles. If the home team were to win each game, then the 76ers would have won four games, the Lakers would have won three games, and the 76ers would have won the series, so we say that Philadelphia had the home-court advantage. Los Angeles now had one win, and there were three games remaining at each arena.
Since 2003, the team with home-field advantage in the World Series has won seven times out of ten. In that time, there have been seven victories that account for 73 percent of all series victories. Since 2007, the last time a World Series team with home-field advantage won the championship, there has been no repeat performance. The home teams have an overall record of (.690) since the All-Star Game awarded home field advantage to the World Series winners ten years ago. In 73 home games, the home team has won 44 percent of the time, while the visiting team has won only 21 percent.
ASG won't decide World Series home-field
The Rangers are currently in second place, with a record, but a win in the Wild Card Game would propel them to first place. Several teams in both leagues can earn a Wild Card spot in the upcoming playoffs. The Rangers, Red Wings, and Red Bulls all compete in the same division, and the Rockies and Cards compete in their respective divisions. Rangers and Brewers are in the same division, Red Wings and Rockies are in the other.
This list includes MLB, NBA, and NHL playoff series that are best-of-five or best-of-seven in which the home team wins every game. Gone are the days where there was mystery in seeing Clayton Kershaw pitch to Mike Trout. Interleague play, a great idea that has slowly morphed into an unnecessary contrivance, has killed that. (Free agency does that too, in a different way.) The lines between leagues have been blurred.
How is World Series home-field advantage now determined?
Home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Finals is given to the team with the best season record. The NBA is the only league that has home-court advantage based solely on which team has the best record . As part of a settlement for a 1992 strike by the NHL Players Association, the National Hockey League scheduled two neutral-site games for each team in a non-NHL market, with one as designated home team and one as the designated away team. The neutral site games ended after the 1993–94 NHL season, as the following season was lockout-shortened, and the 1995–96 NHL season reduced the regular season from 84 to 82 games per team.
While some visiting fans may travel to attend the game, home team fans will generally have better access to tickets and easier transport to the event, thus in most cases they outnumber the visitors' fans . In some sports, such as association football, sections of the stadium will be reserved for supporters of one team or the other but the home team's fans will have the bulk of the seating available to them. In addition, stadium/arena light shows, sound effects, fireworks, cheerleaders, and other means to enliven the crowd will be in support of the home team. Stadium announcers in many sports will emphasize the home team's goals and lineup to excite the crowd.
The winner of the pennant has the best regular-season record and thus gains the upper hand. Prior to 2003, there was an international rotation of the World Series. After the 2002 All-Star Game, a 7–7 tie after 11 innings put the advantage on the line, and former commissioner Bud Selig invoked the rule. When the World Series is held at home, the All-Star Game is a must-win event. In this system, the best teams are those with the most passionate fan bases, such as the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Red Wings.
And now, with the Astros' move, the fair and equitable 15/15 split between leagues has necessitated a constant supply of Interleague Play. Let's put more impact behind this situation by making the Interleague games count twice. The All-Star Game will still have the stars and the game, and nothing of value will be lost. We have before us a handy, built-in alternative method for determining which league should enjoy the many benefits of home-field advantage in the World Series. This alternative would settle the matter by the end of the regular season. This alternative method accompanies us through every season, more comprehensively now than ever before.
You'll notice that I emboldened the years in which home-field advantage went to a league other than the one it would have gone to under the old rules. In a best-of-five or best-of-seven series, the home team has won every game of a Major League Baseball postseason series 11 times. Major League Baseball’s response to having the 2002 All-Star Game end in a tie was to add some sort of incentive to the midseason exhibition. The solution was to give World Series home-field advantage to the league that won the All-Star Game. The American League won the first seven All-Star Games under this new system and had home-field advantage in the Fall Classic in 11 of the 14 seasons under that arrangement.
This may be a national stadium that is not a home stadium to any club (for example Wembley Stadium hosts the FA Cup Final and semi-finals). Alternatively the neutral venue may be the home stadium of another club, such as was used historically to stage FA Cup semi-finals. In some cup competitions, (for example the FA Cup in all rounds prior to the semi-final), home advantage is determined by a random drawing. However, if the initial match is drawn , home advantage for the replay is given to the other team. The home field advantage refers to the edge which the team hosting a baseball game (the “home team”) has over its opponent (the “visiting team”). Home field advantage also refers to the team that will host the greater number of games in a best-of-five or best-of-seven postseason series, if the series goes to the limit.
The winner of this game will be given home-field advantage in the playoffs. From the 2003 World Series onward, there have been 50 World Series games; the home team has won 30 of those, a nice and tidy .600 winning percentage. What's more, of those 10 series, the team with home-field advantage has won the championship seven times. If you add in the three prior World Series to get a rough idea of the decade, the winning percentage for home teams jumps to .630, or 43 of 68 games. All of the World Series-winning teams from those three years had home-field advantage. A requirement to play home matches at a neutral venue has been used as a punishment by UEFA for teams whose fans cause disturbances at a previous match.
In 592 games played under the restricted conditions through March, home teams suffered a decline of 10% while road teams’ win rates increased by 7%. During the course of these playoff series, however, sports announcers or columnists will sometimes mention a team "gaining" or "losing" home-field advantage. This can happen after a visiting team has just won a game in the series. In playoff series format, the home-field advantage is said to exist for whichever team would win the series if all remaining games in the series are won by the home team for that game. Therefore, it is possible for a visiting team to win a game and, hence, gain home-field advantage. This is somewhat similar to the concept of losing serve in tennis.
